School Birthday – Cups History

In the lead-up to the School Birthday celebrations on Tuesday 4th June, Mr Francisco Planella, Rugby coach, delivered a special presentation to pupils from Senior School, held at the Jean Jackson Hall on Tuesday 27th May. The session provided historical context for the InterColour Cups, highlighting the legacy of the individuals for whom each trophy is named -figures whose dedication, character, and lasting impact have shaped our School’s identity.

These Cups, contested between pupils in 3º and 4ºEM, will be held during the School Birthday celebrations on Wednesday 4th June. Each match will serve a tribute to the individuals whose names these trophies bear—bringing together tradition, school spirit, and a shared sense of purpose.

We invite our community to learn more about these iconic members of our history and to celebrate their legacy.

José Ignacio Quinteros Football Cup

Arrived to The Grange School in 1940 as Sports & PE teacher. Then, he became Head of Sports and started swimming within the School. For that reason the swimming pool is named after him.

Esgrima was his sport. He won the Southamerican Championship in 1955, in Argentina. The cup was presented by the President of Argentina at that time, Mr. Juan Domingo Perón.

Since 1956 a football match is played in his honour (3º with 4ºEM boys). Until 2011 Mr Quinteros himself gave the kickoff each match. The same cup Mr Quinteros won in Argentina is the one he donated to the School and is presented year after year to the winner team.

James Cowan Hockey Cup

Mr James Cowan came from Ireland, and first arrived at The Grange School in 1960. He was a Maths teacher and sports coach (taking particular responsibility for the First XV) until he left in 1963. In 1974 Mr Cowan returned to The Grange as Deputy Head of the Prep School.

In 1976 he was Deputy Head of the School, and later he became Headmaster, twice. The first occasion was between 1985 and 1997, and the second was in the 2001 academic year.

Mr Cowan coached First XI Hockey for more than 15 years. He not only educated pupils on the technical aspects of the game, but instilled in every team the values of The Grange School through that sport. He valued highly the concepts of fair play, respect, teamwork, perseverance, good manners, and hard work. He lived by those concepts himself, becoming a role model to all those pupils he coached.

He will always be in the hearts of those who came into contact with him. For these reasons the School has chosen to call this cup “James Cowan Hockey Cup”.

Juan Carlos Jung Rugby Cup

Mr Juan Carlos Jung was educated at the Mackay School. When he left Mackay he went to England. During his time there he received communication from friends working at The Grange asking if he would be interested in joining The School.

In 1974 he arrived back in Santiago and joined the Staff of The Grange as an English teacher, tutor, and Rugby coach. In 1975 he was asked to become Head of Sports, a position he accepted.As Head of Sports Mr Jung was tireless in his efforts, always enthusiastic, inspiring, and gave unconditional love to the School.

Many generations of Rugby players will remember being coached by Juan Carlos Jung during their time in the Intermediate team. He was hard, but always fair. On the sports field he was an emblematic figure to be aspired to, representing the values of sportsmanship The Grange holds.

For these reasons the School has chosen to call this cup “Juan Carlos Jung Rugby Cup”.
