AR (Accelerated Reader) is part of our reading programme and is designed to strengthen comprehension, vocabulary, and independent reading habits. After finishing a book, pupils take a short online quiz through the Renaissance platform to check their understanding of what they have read.
At the beginning of each term, pupils complete a STAR Reading test. This assessment measures skills such as vocabulary knowledge, comprehension, and inferencing. Based on the results, each pupils is given a ZPD (Zone of Proximal Development) – a reading range that helps them choose books that are appropriately challenging.
Books in the library are labelled according to ZPD levels. Once a week, pupils visit the library with their English and Spanish teachers, alongside the library team, to select books that balance interest, vocabulary exposure, and challenge in both languages. From Monday to Thursday, pupils also have a dedicated 20-minute reading session at School, supported by the shadow teacher, allowing them to read independently and without interruption.
Pupils are expected to read at least 15 minutes per night at home. Each pupil has an individual AR goal set by their teacher and is expected to achieve 100% of this target each term. Progress can be monitored through Home Connect.
